Sumi-e is one of the Japanese traditional arts. I think a lot of people
in Europe have already known the beauty of Sumi-e by viewing it at museums,
in magazines, and posters around town.
If you are able to paint beautiful Sumi-e including a unique characteristic
of the East Asia, your days will surely be more pleasant. I have made this
school in order for people in Europe to know the profundity and beauty of
Sumi-e, and understand its traditional technique, by painting Sumi-e themselves.
Although to paint pictures is a creation of freestyle in the first place,
there are a lot of traditional techniques and styles left by our predecessor
in the field of Sumi-e. I teach carefully and plainly these techniques and
styles. Additionally, besides these traditional techniques, I'm going to
generously teach all things that I've got in my experience and studying
to create Sumi-e works.
In our school you will be able to learn the fundamentals for understanding
the practical application and the traditional techniques to apply to your
original creations. When you understand the joy of Sumi-e paintings, it
will give you a new pleasure with which you can enjoy your own works with
a calm heart. And this will open a path to Zen in your heart.
You don't need to think hard. When you are interested, your next step
is very simple. Just do it. Let's start Sumi-e together.

What is Sumi-e?
Sumi-e is a picture which is done by shading, contrasting and bluring with
a black ink.It called "Sui-boku-ga/水墨画" in Japan and China generally.
East-Asian arts Sumi-e/墨絵 and Sho/書 (calligraphy) have developed together
and both use black ink. Originally Sumi-e expressed everything including
colours by only using black ink. There is an expression in Japanese "black
ink has five colours".
This is related to Buddism and Zen, because these ideas consider colors
as a worldy desires. And this is a beauty of black ink Sumi-e and one of
Sumie's charms. The other charm of sumie is sumie pictures painted with
“Sumi-e” originated in China. It has already existed in the Tang period
(around 8th centuries). It was introduced into Japan with Zen in the Kamakura
Era (13th centuries). Sumi-e quickly became popular and a Japanese style
Sumi-e was born which was suitable for its wet ground climate in the Muromachi
Era (14~16th centuries). Around the early days of the Edo Era, Sumi-e style
was further influenced by Tohaku Hasegawa/長谷川等伯 and Sotatsu Tawaraya/俵屋宗達
and other artists.
In our school we teach mainly Japanese style Sumi-e, but our curriculum
also covers Chinese style Sumi-e.
